From glossy to matte there is a wide range of finishes available for PU and melamine, following we will tell you the difference between Melamine vs PU Polish.

Melamine Polish: What Is It and How Does It Work?

In India, wood polish is popularly used hence it has a low-cost price. Naturally, melamine is a harmful substance. The methanal is melamine resin, it is not harmful but be cautious while using it. A protective layer is formed to guard the surface after using melamine polish. The resin is a strong and heat-resistant compound.

Melamine is a closed pore, meaning it restricts the pores on the wood’s surface and decides to stop it from breathing. It helps to protect the wood both by hot and cold objects, and also some minor damage.

The Durability of Melamine Polish vs PU Polish:

Melamine Polish and PU Polish both have a matte and glossy finish. They’re both synthetic polymers that laminate surfaces by forming a transparent film on top of them. They perform similarly, with the key differences being in the coatings’ length and resistance. Polymer is taken into account by PU Polish as it is more durable than Melamine.

  • For the exterior surface:
Melamine polish has minimal water resistance. When exposed to sunlight, melamine polish deteriorates, turning yellow and loosening. It can even chip off at the furniture’s edges over time. Polyurethane Polish, on the other hand, can be incredibly tough and strong, offering excellent wear resistance and long-term surface protection. For the exterior, PU Polish would be recommendable to Melamine Polish.

The advantages of PU polish outweigh the drawbacks of melamine. It is more scratch-proof and resistant to water. It’s also versatile and doesn’t get hurt when you pass it around. The issue of sunlight-induced yellowing does not exist here.

The water-based PU polish does like melamine polish, but the solvent polish on metal, glass, marble and other surfaces is suitable. Polyurethane has some drawbacks as well. It is more expensive than melamine and takes longer to dry. To give you a perfect finish, it requires dirt- and dust-free setting.

  • Cost:
Melamine Polish is a budget-friendly option for wooden service, while PU Polish is a high-end option. Melamine is more suited to interior applications which are only available in wood.  It has a drying time of 20-30 minutes, promising you don’t destroy your finish. Polish for gloss and matte finishes are less expensive in terms of material and service than PU Polish.

Although PU gloss and matte have a shorter pot life, they must be mixed with solvents within 4 hours. Polyurethane is long-lasting and robust, therefore fixation and removal might be tough. It’s not easy to strip. It also contains toxic chemicals that are harmful to the environment.

What is the Difference Between a Gloss and Matte finish…..?

Gloss and matte are the opposites of each other. Matte is a dark finish that does not reflect light and is not glossy. It has a rich and elegant appearance. The matt finish is utilized to add a visual and natural texture to the polish.

The gloss finish, on the other hand, shines brilliantly. The amount of light reflected by a stain is referred to as gloss. It comes in a wide variety of finishes, including flat, satin, and semi-gloss. The gloss draws attention to the original surface’s colour and patterns.
